Lone Star Flight Museum
The Lone Star Flight Museum, a non-profit facility currently located at Scholes Field in Galveston, was devastated by Hurricane Ike in September 13, 2008. Many of their classic aircraft were damaged or destroyed as 8 feet of water surged over the airport. After rebuilding, the museum announced in August 2011 that it planned to move to a new facility at Ellington Field.
The museum's executive director, Larry Gregory, outlined the plan to lease a 14 acre area at Ellington, along with a contract with the Houston Airport Sytem that will require the flight museum to invest approximately $7,500,000 for buildings and other construction. The new facility will include hangars for the group's classic aircraft, as well as a museum building with visitor areas and a movie theater.
In October, 2013, an official of the Lone Star Flight Museum confirmed that the move to Ellington is still part of their long-term plan, although the physical move may not occur for another couple of years.
Houston's Ellington Airport is already home to the Texas Flying Legends museum & hangar, which added their Ellington facility in October, 2010.
