Opened in 1917, originally a military air field, named Ellington Field, for pilot Lt. Eric L. Ellington
The City of Houston purchased Ellington Airport from the US military in 1984.
Ellington Airport is currently operated by the Houston Airport System as a joint civilian & military airport. A Class IV Airport, Air Traffic Control Tower operates 24 hrs.
The airport currently serves civilian General Aviation, NASA, Civil Air Patrol, Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard, US Coast Guard
